In today’s world, almost nothing surprises us anymore. But just when we think nothing could disrupt our daily routine, a new theatrical spectacle hits our screens. Our world has become a comedy—and as the saying goes, it’s better to laugh than to cry.
That’s why we bring you this week’s new show: a political production starring lawmakers, governors, and emergency flights… This is the story of Texas’ legislative escape, a modern tragicomedy about electoral maps, fugitive democracy, and cold coffee.
Act 1: Escape in the Name of Voting
It began as political soap operas often do: with a last-minute flight and an electoral cause.
Bloomberg News confirmed that every Democratic lawmaker in Texas temporarily fled the state to block a bill they claimed would “surgically” redraw electoral districts—with such precision it might exclude African American, Hispanic… and probably any Texan who doesn’t listen to country music.

Act 2: “Political Refugees are welcome in Illinois
On an episode of Late Night with Stephen Colbert, the governor of Illinois stole the show by joking about his role as host while offering refuge to Texas Democratic legislators who fled the state to block an electoral redistricting law.
“We’re giving them temporary refuge… as political refugees, but with snacks.”
Meanwhile, lawmakers savored their sweet exile in friendly territory—where laws couldn’t reach them, but microphones could.

Act 3: The Sheriff of Democracy Won’t Back Down
Like any good Western, Texas Governor Greg Abbott didn’t stand idly by.
On August 4, he ordered the arrest of the fugitive legislators, accusing them of derailing the legislative process—and possibly “overusing frequent flyer miles.”

Act 4: New York Joins the Show
The saga took a new twist when New York’s governor joined the cause, offering sanctuary to the Texas lawmakers.
In recent statements, she insisted this move broke no laws and that her state was “open to those fighting for democracy”:
“We’re on the right side of history… we’re at war.”

Act 5: Cold Coffee, Signs and Fiery Speeches
Today, from Illinois, the fugitive legislators held a press surrounded by banners, microphones, and cold coffee. They denounced the redistricting law that, according to them, seeks to dilute minority votes.
One proclaimed with cinematic gravitas:
“We didn’t flee. We flew for democracy.”
“They’ll find refuge here… as long as they don’t ask to move in permanently.”
Outside, supporters and opponents debated like a civic-themed episode of La Rosa de Guadalupe. Meanwhile, Illinois’ governor dropped another gem:

What’s Next?
Will lawmakers return to Texas? Will they face arrests? Will electoral maps be redrawn with a compass, calculator, and Photoshop?
One thing’s certain: democracy, for now, travels in economy class and holds press conferences with delicious cold coffee.
